Adoptiversary Peanut Butter Oat Dog Biscuits!

We have three dogs that we’ve rescued. And each year on their “adoptiversary” I make them their own biscuits. They go NUTS for these things. More than any treat I’ve ever bought from the store.

And to celebrate our 5 year adoptiversary with Simcoe, I’m sharing his favorite biscuit with you all!

But first, let me tell you a little about this lab-pit that I love so much.

This face helped us heal after we lost Red to cancer five years ago. After Red passed, everyone told us to take time before adopting another dog… but that wasn’t meant to be for us. We were heartbroken. And while we walked with swollen, red-eyes down the streets of Portland with our best friends (who lovingly came up for the weekend to keep us company), our paths crossed with a woman walking a puppy.

We sniffled and bent to pet her puppy, pouring what love our broken hearts could muster up into the small, happy creature at our feet. “I wish I could take you home,” I whispered into his fur, before kissing his head and standing.
“You can,” she said, smiling at us. “I’m taking him to an adoption event right now.”
Sean and I looked at each other. We weren’t supposed to be going to a pet adoption event. We were supposed to be getting brunch. We were supposed to be grieving. But if anything ever felt like a sign, it was this.
And we left that adoption event with our big lug, Simcoe.
Happy adoptiversary, buddy! Thank you for repairing our broken hearts with your exuberance, sloppy kisses, and snuggles.

To celebrate Simcoe’s adoptiversary, every year, I make these dog treats which all our dogs go CRAZY for! They’re healthy and super easy!

Peanut Butter Oatmeal Dog Treats

Servings 100 small bones

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (You can also use fish oil which is great for your dog’s coat)
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup wheat germ (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Whisk together peanut butter, honey, oil and chicken broth. In a separate bowl, combine flours and oatmeal. Mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients. Place dough on flour dusted surface. Roll or press dough out to about 3/8” inch thick. Use a small bone cookie cutter to cut out cookies. My cookie cutter was 2”x3/4”, but for larger dogs you may want a larger cookie cutter. Roll out leftover scraps and cut out as many as possible. Put cut out cookies on a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake for 14-16 minutes. Transfer to a cooling rack.

Note: These will be more the consistency and softness of a cookie, not a biscuit.
